SAG Awards rebrands to The Actor Awards
The SAG Awards have confirmed plans to rebrand to The Actor Awards presented by SAG-AFTRA.
The prestigious award ceremony, which will be in its 32nd year in 2026, explained that the name change was due to the trophies they hand out being called ‘The Actor’ since 1995.
Jon Brockett, the showrunner and executive producer of the broadcast ceremony, explained the change in a statement, “Since the beginning, our statue has been called ‘The Actor’ and we’re a show that’s entirely about actors, so this new name is a perfect next step in the show’s evolution.”
Brockett continued, “The Actor Awards presented by SAG-AFTRA’ gives viewers in 190-plus countries an immediate understanding of who we are and what we’re about.”
In a newly published FAQ section of their website regarding the name change, The Actor Awards said of the new moniker, “Laser-focusing the name on those two things became the clearest and most straightforward path for this new chapter of the show.”
Notably, the name change has happened after they reached an agreement with Netflix to broadcast the ceremony from 2024 onwards.
On their website, they said the name change had been discussed prior to the Netflix deal, claiming, “This evolution has been a long time coming. Since the show’s inception, the statuette has been called The Actor and, as the show’s global audience expanded through Netflix, the timing felt right to make the alignment official and step confidently into the show’s next.”
The next edition of The Actor Awards is set to take place on March 1st, 2026, at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on March 1st, 2026, and will also be broadcast on Netflix.
Nominations are expected to be announced in January, but no specific date has been revealed.
