Sacha Baron Cohen has secretly made a new ‘Ali G’ movie

Sacha Baron Cohen is returning as Ali G, more than two decades on since he last visited the classic character.

The film has already wrapped production, and the fact that the news of the project didn’t leak during the shooting process is a positive sign that suggests Cohen managed to keep it a covert operation.

The Staines native was first introduced to audiences on The 11 O’Clock Show in 1998, which led to him securing his own spin-off show, Da Ali G Show, which had three seasons in the early 2000s.

In 2002, Ali G was brought to the big screen for Ali G Indahouse, and now, as The Insneider first reported, a follow-up is on the way.

Cohen ignited rumours that Ali G could possibly stage a comeback when it was claimed he performed a secret stand-up set as the character in Sydney, Australia, in June 2021.

He later explained to GQ that it was true, sharing, “Yes. I just wanted to get on stage and muck around and see what Ali G would be like with a crowd. It was really good fun.”

When asked if he’d do it again, Cohen said, “Yes, I think I would. Because the reason I became a comedian was that I loved people laughing at my jokes. To actually hear laughter is a rare thing for me. When I do the movies, I think it is funny, but I have to wait three months to hear an audience laugh.”

However, now it has emerged that his vehicle for bringing Ali G back into public consciousness is another film rather than a stage show.

Reflecting on the character, who is a suburban white Brit that imitates Black culture, during an episode of WTF with Marc Maron in 2016, Cohen claimed that the cartoonish Ali G “couldn’t really exist”, before adding, “Part of Ali G was an attempt, subtly, to slightly undermine the establishment.”

During Ali G’s initial run, he staged interviews with everyone from the Beckhams to Donald Trump to Noam Chomsky.

No further details have been revealed regarding the upcoming film.
