Sacha Baron Cohen and Isla Fisher announce divorce

After 20 years together, actors Sacha Baron Cohen and Isla Fisher have announced their separation, which took place last year.

The divorce was announced on the couple’s Instagram stories, stating, “In 2023, jointly filed to end our marriage.” The pair first began dating in 2001 and tied the knot in 2003. Since their marriage, they have also worked together onscreen, including on the comedy film Brothers Grimsby.

This announcement comes after the announcement of actor Rebel Wilson’s memoir, Rebel Rising, where she goes into detail about how uncomfortable she felt around Cohen while on set. Wilson had played the girlfriend to Cohen’s ‘Nobby’ Butcher and had accused the actor of bullying her while making the movie.

According to Wilson, Cohen went out of his way to accentuate her weight for the role, including making her wear clothes meant to draw attention to her figure. She also said that Cohen went out of his way to make fun of her because of her size.

This would later grow into allegations of sexual misconduct, where Wilson claimed that Cohen wanted her to go completely nude for one of her scenes in the film and stated that he wanted to. Wilson would later recall how she would attempt to diffuse the situation, recalling, “I was now scared. I wanted to get out of there, so I finally compromised: I slapped him on the ass and improvised a few lines as the character”.

Despite the recent allegations, the family has requested privacy at this time, stating, “We have always prioritized our privacy, and have been quietly working through this change. We forever share in our devotion and love for our children”.

Of course, this is far from the first time that Cohen has garnered controversy due to his performance. When working on films such as Borat! and its subsequent sequel, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, Cohen would drum up controversy for racial stereotypes that were deemed insensitive for most viewers. Outside of the announcement of his separation from Fisher, Cohen has maintained that every allegation is completely false.
