Sabrina Carpenter to star in ‘Alice in Wonderland’ musical movie

Sabrina Carpenter is set to star in and produce a currently untitled movie musical based on the Lewis Carroll series, Alice in Wonderland.

The project, which is in the very early stages, will be written and helmed by Lorene Scafaria. She is best known for writing and directing the Jennifer Lopez-starring crime movie Hustlers. This film earned Scafaria a nomination for ‘Best Director’ from the Independent Spirit Awards.

Another name already attached to the project is Marc Platt, the producer behind both the Broadway and the screen productions of Wicked. He has also worked on movies like Legally Blonde and La La Land.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Carpenter approached the studio with the idea around a year ago. Eventually, the concept evolved to the point where producers and a writer were invited onto the project.

The singer, who recently topped the charts with her album Man’s Best Friend, was previously a child actor, appearing in the 2010s series Girl Meets World as well as the movie The Hate U Give and Emergency.

Alice in Wonderland follows the tale of a young girl who falls down a rabbit hole into a world of opposites, where things don’t quite add up. On her quest to return home, she meets several infamous characters like the Mad Hatter and the Cheshire Cat.

The classic tale has been adapted several times for the big screen. It was first turned into an animated Disney movie in 1951, and a live-action version directed by Tim Burton in 2010 that grossed over one billion dollars.

Elsewhere, Carpenter just received six Grammy Awards nominations, including ‘Album of the Year’, ‘Song of the Year’, and ‘Best Pop Solo Performance’.
