Ryan Gosling and Shawn Levy confirmed for ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’

After much speculation, it has been officially announced that Ryan Gosling will take the lead in the new Star Wars offering, with Shawn Levy in the director’s seat for Star Wars: Starfighter. Disney has set a theatrical release date of May 28th, 2027.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and chief creative officer Dave Filoni made the announcement on April 18th at the banner’s annual Star Wars Celebration event in Tokyo.

Both Gosling and Levy appeared as livestreamed figures at the event in Tokyo. Gosling wittily referenced Star Wars lines to screaming fans: “The force is a mysterious thing, but, as I’m here, the force is the fans. All we can hope for is, ‘May the fans be with us.’”

Levy added: “We’re fans too. There’s obviously a relationship between these stories and the audience, but we’ve spent our lives in that audience. We know how meaningful it is.”

Variety has also confirmed that Jonathan Tropper has written the screenplay for the film. Tropper has previously written features for Levy, such as ‘The Adam Project’ and ‘This Is Where I Leave You’. He is also behind the Apple TV+ series ‘Your Friends & Neighbors’.

No other casting details were announced. This comes closely after reports that Mikey Madison, who won the Academy Award for ‘Best Actress’ for her role in Sean Baker’s Anora earlier this year, rejected a role in the movie.

Madison was reportedly offered a role, but after meeting about the project, she passed and decided it wasn’t the right move.

Starfighter will be the first Star Wars feature since The Rise of Skywalker debuted in December 2019. This feature will focus on new characters in the universe and is set roughly half a decade after Star Wars: Episode IX—The Rise of Skywalker.
