Mikey Madison rejects role in Shawn Levy’s new ‘Star Wars’ movie

Oscar-winner Mikey Madison will not be joining the star-studded roster of actors who have appeared in the Star Wars franchise.

After winning the Academy Award for ‘Best Actress’ for her role in Sean Baker’s Anora earlier this year, Madison has been under a microscope, with many in the industry wondering how she’ll leverage her new status Although she has yet to sign on to a new project, her decision to turn down a major role is perhaps even more illustrative of her next moves.

According to Variety, Madison was offered a role in Shawn Levy’s upcoming Star Wars movie, but after meeting about the project, she passed.

Although details on the film remain tightly under wraps (it doesn’t even have a title yet), it has been in the works since 2022. The screenplay is being written by Jonathan Tropper, the writer behind two of Levy’s previous films, This Is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project. Ryan Gosling has already been secured as the star.

Levy is still riding high off the success of Deadpool & Wolverine, which made over $1 billion worldwide last year. His previous films have included Night at the Museum and Free Guy. He’ll be producing the new Star Wars movie alongside Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy.

Since Madison won the Oscar, speculation has swirled over where she might take her career. At 26, she is not yet an established A-list star and is not attached to any major franchise. Her previous work includes the television series Better Things and Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, but Anora served as her introduction as a leading actor.

Turning down a franchise as powerful as Star Wars is a bold move, and it might be an indication that Madison is committed to staying within the realm of character-driven cinema rather than running the risk of being swallowed by the maw of a studio-driven, highly commercial endeavour.
