Ryan Coogler provides promising update on ‘X-Files’ reboot

In a recent podcast appearance, director Ryan Coogler announced that the long-rumoured X-Files reboot is happening and it’s “immediately next” in his list of upcoming projects.

The Black Panther filmmaker appeared ready to go when discussing the reboot. He shared on Last Podcast on the Left: “I’ve been excited about that for a long time, and I’m fired up to get back to it, and that, you know, some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really fucking scary.”

Coogler, who also recently opened up about his grief surrounding Chadwick Boseman’s death, has discussed the project with Gillian Anderson. The Sex Education actor starred in the popular FBI show between 1993 and 2002. She returned for two seasons between 2016 and 2018, but in 2024 suggested that the eleventh season would be her final time playing the role.

At that time, Anderson stated previously that she wasn’t “enjoying the direction that it was heading” and felt that she “didn’t have a voice in it”. As a result, she decided she needed to “move on to something where I might have more of a voice.”

Despite this, Anderson eventually conceded that she could be swayed towards the reprisal of her role: “Whether I am involved in it is a whole other thing. I’m not saying no.” Coogler seems hopeful that Anderson will return for the reboot.

Of Coogler, Anderson said: “I think he’s really cool and I think if he did it, it would probably be done incredibly well. And maybe I’ll pop in for a little something something.”

Little else is currently known about Coogler’s vision for a reboot of The X-Files. Back in 2023, Creator Chris Carter suggested that the Black Panther director was going to “remount” the beloved sci-fi series with “a diverse cast.”

This came after worried comments from Carter, who theorised that Coogler faced new pressure with this project due to the state of the sociopolitical climate. He noted: “Everything’s a conspiracy. No one knows what the truth is. It’s completely subjective and relative now.”
