Late ‘Rust’ cinematographer’s family condemns Alec Baldwin over new reality show

The family of the late Halyna Hutchins, the cinematographer who was killed on the set of Rust, has condemned Alec Baldwin for his new reality show and his recent admission of how the incident impacted his mental health.

In late 2021, Baldwin fired a prop gun which had been loaded with ammunition without his knowledge that led to Hutchins’ death while on the set of Rust. Baldwin later faced a trial for involuntary manslaughter but the case was dismissed.

While he’s no longer facing any charges relating to the death of Hutchins, Baldwin is still in the midst of a legal battle relating to the event and filed a lawsuit against Santa Fe officials earlier this year.

He’s also documenting his mental health struggles relating to Hutchins’ death in the new reality show, The Baldwins, which focuses on his home life with his family.

In a trailer clip, his wife, Hilaria, said: “Everyone who is close to Alec has seen his mental health decline. He was diagnosed with PTSD, and he says in his darkest moments, ‘If an accident had to have happened this day, why am I still here? Why couldn’t it have been me?’. You wake up in the morning and you’re like, ‘Oh god, why did I wake up?’”

Baldwin also discussed his current well-being and recited a conversation with a friend who had asked about his situation, recalling, “I said, ‘I’m happier when I’m asleep than when I’m awake’.”

Now, lawyers working on behalf of Hutchins’ mother, Olga Solovey, father, Anatolii Androsovych, and sister, Svetlana Zemko, filed a notice of disposition in Santa Fe on March 4th in an attempt to bring Baldwin back to court.

The Hutchins family is represented by two law firms—Gloria Allred and Carpenter & Zuckerman (CZ Law) as co-counsel. In a joint statement to The Independent, the legal team said: “The Baldwin reality show at once celebrates Mr Baldwin’s joy of being with his children while ignoring the fact that Alec Baldwin took a child away from her parents. That is the painful and actual reality with which Halyna’s parents and sister live each and every day.”

The lawyers, consisting of Gloria Allred, John Carpenter, Carlos Hernandez, and Alina Vulic, continued: “It is long overdue for Alec Baldwin to admit and face the real-life consequences that he caused Halyna’s parents and sister. It is time for him to face reality under oath.”

Additionally, the legal team hit out at Baldwin’s PTSD claims, noting, “Why is he claiming that he has PTSD? Is his reality show just a veiled attempt to create sympathy for himself with a future jury pool in our civil case? Is this just a shameless attempt to portray him as the real victim in this case?”
