Russell Crowe and Rami Malek to star in James Vanderbilt’s ‘Nuremberg’

Russell Crowe, Rami Malek and Michael Shannon have been confirmed to star in James Vanderbilt’s new drama Nuremberg.

The historical drama is set in post-war Germany and will explore the Nuremberg trials. Filming on the movie will begin in Hungary next February. Nuremberg is based on Jack El Hai’s book The Nazi and the Psychiatrist, and the script for the production has also been written by Vanderbilt.

The movie tells the story of American psychiatrist Douglas Kelley, who will be portrayed by Malek. The role of Kelley is to find out whether Nazi prisoners are capable of facing a trial for their war crimes, and he must go toe-to-toe with Adolf Hitler’s lieutenant Hermann Göring, played by Crowe.

Speaking about the new project, Vanderbilt said: “What an absolute honor it is to be working with such a tremendously talented group of actors. Our partners at Bluestone and Walden have been incredibly supportive, and I cannot wait to bring this amazing true story to the screen.”

Meanwhile, Richard Saperstein, the CEO of Bluestone Entertainment, who are behind the film, commented: “It’s a privilege to collaborate with this formidable group of artists. I am excited and humbled by the chance to be part of such important and relevant storytelling.”

Ben Tappan, Bluestone’s President of Production, added: “Walden is thrilled to help bring James Vanderbilt‘s vision to the screen in the courageous effort to pursue justice in the aftermath of World War II. This astounding moment in history, as brought to life with our extraordinary cast, is a riveting story that is sure to intrigue and resonate with audiences today.”

As of yet, there is no scheduled release date for Nuremberg.

The news of Crowe’s latest role cames after he admitted to being considering retirement earlier this year. At a film festival in the Czech Republic, the Australian actor said at a press conference: “You are standing in front of the mirror, and go: ‘Who the fuck is that?’ I am in that period now”.
