Rose Byrne claims “parenting is the ultimate role of my life”
Rose Byrne has claimed that “parenting is the ultimate role of my life”, amid her current streak of Hollywood success.
The actor was speaking to reporters after her win for ‘Best Lead Performance’ at the Film Independent Spirit Awards on February 15th for her standout role in the movie If I Had Legs I’d Kick You.
Subsequently, reflecting on the film’s themes of a mother being pushed to the limit by her child’s medical needs, Byrne was asked how the experience of telling such a story has changed her own perspective on motherhood.
She replied: “Oh, it changed everything. We spoke to a lot of women – mothers who have children with special needs, so that was extraordinary to hear them share their stories, and it’s a very personal story to Mary,” referring to the director, Mary Bronstein.
Byrne continued: “Parenting is the ultimate role of my life. It’s my biggest role as well, and my most important role, and also the hardest role ever. The film really speaks to that.”
While accepting her award earlier in the evening, the actor appeared emotional as she paid tribute to all who were involved in the making of If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, particularly crediting the existence of her character, Linda, to the independent film scene as “she’s fierce, she’s ferocious, and she’s a middle-aged woman.”
Byrne’s performance in the film has garnered her complete universal acclaim since its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival last January, before its wider theatrical release in the US in October.
She has already picked up the award for ‘Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy’ at the Golden Globes, while she has also received nods for ‘Best Actress’ and ‘Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role’ at the Oscars and Actor Awards, respectively.
Although If I Had Legs I’d Kick You has been released in the US for a number of months, it is set to hit cinemas in the UK from February 19th.
