Romy confirms a new album from The xx is on the way

2024 could see the return of The xx as Romy confirms the band are back in the studio.

The musician and producer confirmed that The xx are working on their fourth album. The trio haven’t released anything since their 2017 album I See You as they moved onto solo projects.

Romy recently released her debut solo album, MID AIR, focusing on dance sounds as a possible suggestion for where the band could go next. Similarly, Jamie XX has been a dominating name in production and dance. Oliver Sim’s 2022 album Hideous Bastard stayed within the alternative sphere the band first broke into.

As for how the new album might sound, Romy told NME that the sessions are feeling “quite wide open”. Reflecting on how their solo work is shaping the band, she said, “I think Oliver [Sim] and Jamie [xx] and I have all tried new things and learned a lot from different projects, and I think that’s quite healthy to be like, ‘What have you learned? What should we do now?’”

However, there is a suggestion that the band will return to form with the sound that first captured the world. While the sessions are informed by their evolution, Romy added, “you’ll still be able to tell it’s us.”

The xx burst onto the scene in 2009 when their self-titled debut took the alternative world by storm. Bagging them the Mercury Prize in 2010, their fusion of indie, pop and electronic music earned them critical acclaim and a dedicated fan base.

Seven years on from their last album, that dedicated fan base remains strong as the news of a highly-anticipated new record is met with major excitement.
