“Nobody has booked me”: the role Scarlett Johansson wanted for 20 years and didn’t get
Whether Scarlett Johansson is in a Marvel movie or something more experimental like Jonathan Glazer’s Under the Skin, she is always pushing herself towards greater heights, although it doesn’t feel like she can go much further.
I mean, once you’ve already asserted yourself as the second-highest grossing actor of all time and landed major roles in some of the most popular franchises in the world, what else is left to achieve for a Hollywood star? I guess all that’s left now is winning an Oscar, although with two previous nominations to her name, both coming in 2020 for Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit, it seems like it’s not out of the question for Johansson to win one at some point in her career.
More surprisingly though, what she really has her sights set on is actually something more of a childhood fantasy than an adult one. “My daughter is still young. Right now, I think we both share the dream that I will someday be a Disney princess, but it’s probably not going to happen,” she told The New York Times.
Considering that most Disney princesses are teenagers, Johansson might have left it a little late to fulfil her dream of becoming the next Snow White or Cinderella, but then, stranger things have happened, for anything is possible in Hollywood. To be fair, it seems like the actor has been trying to become a Disney princess for some time but she just hasn’t ever been lucky enough to land the job.
The closest she has gotten to playing a princess came when she landed the voice role of Princess Mindy in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, but that wasn’t exactly the same as actually getting to put on the nice dresses and play an iconic Disney character.
“I’ve been asking for that job for the past 20 years, and nobody has booked me,” she revealed, even though she has what it takes to be a Disney icon, what with her diverse musical talents, which she has demonstrated over the years.
Besides releasing several albums, including her debut record Anywhere I Lay My Head, which predominantly featured Tom Waits covers, Johansson has also contributed to several movie musicals soundtracks, like The Jungle Book and Sing, so clearly, she had the chops required, but it appears she’s just missed the boat on becoming a Disney princess.
Although that doesn’t mean she can’t be in a classic Disney fairytale movie, which was a possibility when she signed onto the upcoming live-action adaption of Tangled to play the villainous Mother Gothel, who is responsible for locking Rapunzel away. Why there needs to be a live-action adaptation of the hit animated movie is another question entirely, but that doesn’t really concern Johansson, because she has since dropped out of the project.
Perhaps one day she’ll get to play a princess, but for now, Johansson has got some darker projects on the horizon which her daughter certainly won’t be watching, including a new instalment in The Exorcist franchise (let’s not even go there) and The Batman: Part II.
