Róisín Murphy tells trans activists they’re not “welcome” at her shows
Róisín Murphy is facing a backlash after sharing that trans activists are not “welcome” at any of her live events.
The 52-year-old singer made the remark on June 22nd on her X account, where she shared a slew of posts relating to transgender people and the LGBTQ+ community.
Murphy, who has a long record of inflammatory anti-trans rhetoric, wrote online that trans people were “changing the historical record, denying sexual orientation, piggybacking on their rights movement, undermining public acceptance and dismantling the culture” of the LGBTQ+ community.
In another post on her X account, she claimed that trans people coming out during childhood was “significantly decreasing the numbers and with that, altering the power dynamic irrevocably in the future”.
In response to a fan who explained to Murphy that “LGBT+ people live together in harmony,” Murphy clapped back, “I need to know my audience has my back. So my position must be clear; nothing in between will do.”
She added, “It’s important to claim some territory on which an artist can safely stand. I do not want trans-activists, aware or unaware of my stance, at my concerts, and neither do my fans. Other than that, all are welcome.”
Only eight months ago, Murphy was also under fire for a series of anti-transgender posts made on social media; as a result, she was removed as a headliner of Back In Town Festival in Istanbul, Turkey.
At that time, Murphy shared statistics showing the decrease in the number of 8-22-year-olds identifying as non-binary or transgender in the United States. She wrote, “It was never real. Terribly sad though. Absolute havoc wreaked on children, families and society.”
The former Moloko vocalist previously criticised puberty blockers in 2023. Eventually, the Irish singer apologised for creating an “eruption of damaging and potentially dangerous social-media fire and brimstone”.
However, in light of media coverage of her latest comments, its seems that this time Murphy is not backing down: After Pink News shared the story, she called the outlet “Propaganda SLOP” and “activist bullshit”.
