Roger Waters declares independence from UK in support of Palestine Action
Roger Waters has declared his independence from the UK government as a show of support to Palestine Action.
The Pink Floyd bass guitarist posted a video to X on July 5th in which he branded Palestine Action a “great organisation”, in response to the fact that they have now been deemed a terrorist group by the UK government.
Making a protest sign out of a piece of cardboard, Waters said in the video: “This says, Roger Waters supports Palestine Action. Parliament has been corrupted by agents of a genocidal foreign power. Stand up and be counted. It’s now. This is the moment. I am Spartacus.”
Going on to make his own personal political stance clear, Waters continued: “This is Independence Day, July 5th, 2025. I declare my independence from the government of the UK, who’ve just designated Palestine Action a terrorist, proscribed terrorist organisation.”
The veteran rocker went on to explain why he takes issue with the Westminster ruling, saying that Palestine Action are “non-violent” and “not terrorists in any way.”
Subsequently, due to Waters’ defiant public show of support for the group, he could potentially now face criminal action or prosecution for backing what the UK government now classes as a terrorist organisation.
Waters has been a longtime supporter of Palestinian causes for almost the past two decades, having first been to visit the West Bank after being prompted by fans when he was due to perform a concert in Tel Aviv in 2006.
He is one of the most prominent and vocal members of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement, which landed him with a police investigation in Germany two years ago over allegations of antisemitism. Waters denied the accusations against him.
