Roger Daltrey accepts Knighthood on behalf of “unsung heroes” of Teenage Cancer Trust

The Who’s Roger Daltrey has accepted a knighthood after being a patron of the Teenage Cancer Trust for over two decades.

Daltrey’s work with the Teenage Cancer Trust includes a concert series he has curated at the Royal Albert Hall since 2000, taking a one-year break only during the Coronavirus pandemic. In total, this effort has raised more than £32million in ticket sales for the charity.

In an official statement, the musician expressed his gratitude at receiving the award. He said, “It is a wonderful honour for me and especially for Teenage Cancer Trust. I accept this award not only for myself but on behalf of all the unsung heroes who have given their energy towards making the Teenage Cancer Trust the success it has become.”

Daltrey continued to pay dues to others he has been inspired by on the journey, stating, “The likes of The Who and their fans, Angie Jenkison, Lindsay Hughes, Des Murphy, Rob Ballantine and the late Chris York are some of many who have done so much to elevate the charity, to the point where it now has 28 specialist units in NHS hospitals across the UK.”

The Who have also celebrated this achievement, taking to their Instagram page to write, “Sir Roger is a true inspiration and we salute him and all the other honourees from the worlds of music and the creative arts for enriching our lives with their brilliant human artistry and achievements.”

The Who performed two special shows at the Royal Albert Hall for Teenage Cancer Trust in April of this year, but the performances didn’t quite end the way many anticipated. After an on-stage mix-up, Daltrey and Townshend went on to fire, re-hire, and then fire again their drummer, Zak Starkey.

Starkey has now been replaced by Scott Devours for The Who’s upcoming North American farewell tour
