Roger Daltrey admits he’s reaching the end of his “singing career”

The Who frontman Roger Daltrey has admitted his singing career is coming to an end, as he approaches stepping down as the curator of the annual Teenage Cancer Trust concerts at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

Daltrey founded the series of shows in 2000, and has been responsible for esteemed artists such as Oasis, Paul McCartney and The Cure gracing the famous stage at the iconic venue. However, after dedicating a sizeable portion of his life to the charitable cause, Daltrey is now readying himself to pass the baton on.

Reflecting on his time as curator, which has raised £32million for Teenage Cancer Trust, Daltrey told the Metro: “I’ve met so many over the years. There’s quite a few who will stay with me forever – I could never forget them and the letters and cards really mean a lot – I’ve kept them all. I’m some old fart of a rock singer and this has given me a purpose.”

The rock vocalist continued: “I’m not very good at doing nothing and I’m looking towards the end of a singing career. So this has been something I’m so proud of. Pete and I also founded Teen Cancer America 12 years ago, and we’re getting the chance to get together a lot of data that will really help the science one day.”

The Who frontman also opened up on the difficulties he’s faced in his role, namely, convincing acts to waive their fee. “Gosh, it was tough at the start, because I was determined bands should want to do this for free, and it’s not easy getting big names to actually block out their time. My knees are now so sore from 24 years of begging,” he added.

This year’s set of events is set to begin on March 18th, 2024, with a performance from The Who, who are also playing on March 20th. Additionally, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Young Fathers, and The Chemical Brothers will headline shows. The final concert on March 24th will feature Daltrey, Kelly Jones, Robert Plant, Pete Townshend, Eddie Vedder and Paul Weller.
