Rod Stewart delivers rousing support for Ukraine amid US backlash
Rod Stewart has expressed his support for Ukraine amid the controversy following the recent meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump.
The hitmaker took to social media to express his views, sharing a photo of Zelensky alongside the caption, “Proud To Be British. Well done, Starmer, in welcoming Zelensky to the number 10. We must keep supporting the Ukrainian. Sir Rod.”
His comment comes amid backlash following the recent press conference between Zelensky and Trump on February 28th, during which the latter claimed the Ukrainian president was “gambling with World War Three.” Zelenksy warned that the US would “feel it in the future” if it didn’t support the country.
After the meeting, Prime Minister Keir Starmer met with Zelenksy at Downing Street to show strong support and solidarity with the president and the country. “We count on your support,” Zelensky told the Prime Minister amid the backlash.
Since the Friday conference, figures across music and film have responded, including Jack White, who said Zelensky was a “very courageous man” who “has taken on the struggle of his people and his country with valour and honour.”
He continued: “A long time from now, when history has gotten far past all of these other false leaders and evil opportunists, he will be remembered as a hero and a defender of his people’s freedom in the face of immense opposition. May God bless his path forward and his eventual victory against tyranny.”
Elsewhere, Neil Young recently announced a free concert in Ukraine as part of his upcoming Love Earth world tour, with further details expected in the coming days. Young has previously voiced his opinions on the political climate in Ukraine, describing Russian President Vladimir Putin as “a screwed-up mind” who “wants to relive his life and make things better for himself because of mistakes he thinks were made 50 years ago.”
The announcement also follows US President Donald Trump’s recent meeting with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy, coming just days after another of Young’s website posts titled ‘Leader of the Free World No More’.
“The US has lost its standing,” Young critisied, continuing, “Loyalists will never be stronger than Patriots, and Patriots are in the majority here in the USA. Our Patriots will take to the streets to peacefully demonstrate. There will be a moment of truth in our country, and we will show the world who we really are. The USA will again be the leader of the Free World.”
So, Stewart is far from alone within the entertainment world when it comes to his recent statement on the matter.
