Robert Pattinson to reunite with Christopher Nolan on new movie

English actor Robert Pattinson is teaming up with Christopher Nolan again for a new project from the Oppenheimer director, which is currently shrouded in secrecy.

Notably, the star made his name in films like Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Twilight before displaying further dramatic prowess in Good Life, High Life, and The Lighthouse. Over the past few years, he’s affirmed that he is one of Hollywood’s finest actors for lead roles. He started this chapter by starring in Nolan’s mind-bending 2020 spy thriller Tenet and then in Matt Reeves’ The Batman in 2022.

Tenet divided opinion. It wasn’t helpful that it was released during the Covid-19 pandemic, but it failed to break even, which was a disaster considering Nolan worked on the screenplay for over five years. It was also the director’s last release for Warner Bros, as their relationship broke down during production over arguments about their wanting to release it on HBO Go and box office receipts.

Since then, Nolan released Oppenheimer in 2023. A tremendous success, his story of the eponymous A-bomb creator, starring Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., and an ensemble cast, became the third-highest-grossing movie of the year. It was also part of the Barbenheimer cultural phenomenon and took home numerous accolades.

Now, with the blip of Tenet in the past, Nolan has set his sights on a new feature. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, and Zendaya have already signed on. Pattinson, Damon, Hathaway and Holland are set to take on the core roles.

Pattinson explained his love of Nolan after working on Tenet, and just before the film came out, he told an online press conference in 2020: “Chris is one of those directors where… you grow up watching someone’s movies, and looking forward to them and for some reason, being a fan makes it feel like that person is then out of reach to work with.”

He continued: “It came out of nowhere and it feels very strange. I had never really thought that the opportunity would come up. So when it does come up, it feels like you’re in an entirely different universe. Which is what the making this film felt like as well.”

What do we know about Christopher Nolan’s new movie so far?

Nolan has written the script and is directing his next project, which Universal Pictures will distribute. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the release date is set for July 17th, 2026. It has also been confirmed that Nolan is producing alongside his wife, Emma Thomas, under their Syncopy banner. A shoot in the first half of 2025 is currently being planned.

Nolan is known for being a secretive filmmaker, keeping his projects under tight wraps until the time is right. Previously, outlets have reported that sources say the setting is not in the present day, with it unclear whether that means the past or the future.

However, the news of this upcoming project has arrived with fewer plot or logline details than usual. This has led to much speculation, ranging from it being a period vampire thriller to a helicopter action thriller. Insiders maintain that no suggestion has come close to reality. Far Out‘s own Michael Gordon, thinks an adaptation of the cult 1967 series, The Prisoner, could be in order.
