Robbie Robertson’s children sue late guitarist’s widow

The estate of guitarist Robbie Robertson is caught up in a legal battle after the musician’s children filed a lawsuit against his widow, Janet Zuccarini, over a $6million mansion.

Robertson was a legendary player in The Band, and was instrumental in creating the group’s splendid Americana folk and rock sound. He also played extensively as Bob Dylan’s lead guitarist during some of his busiest and most successful years. In 2023, he passed away after a battle with prostate cancer at the age of 80.

He left behind a widow and three children. However, his family are now at conflict over the matter of his estate, and who has to pay for his multi-million dollar mansion. Robertson’s children have filed a lawsuit, obtained by TheWrap, in which they allege that Zuccarini committed financial elder abuse against their father.

In response, Zuccarini’s lawyers have released a statement claiming the lawsuit to be “meritless fiction”. In The Los Angeles Times the statement read, “This is a gross and exploitative attempt by Robbie Robertson’s children to eviscerate their father’s expressed wishes for his beloved wife Jane.”

The filing references the fact that Zuccarini started her relationship with Robertson later in his life, claiming that she “took advantage of her relationship with a vulnerable and ill Robertson to enrich herself to the detriment of Robertson’s children,” which it states were “the sole intended beneficiaries of his estate.”

Robertson’s children claim that his wife encouraged him to “sell his home so that they could together buy a trophy home owned by David Geffen,” the suit states. It’s this “trophy home” that the dispute surrounds.

Robertson and Zuccarini were equal owners of the property and, according to the suit, were supposed to contribute equally to expenses. According to the lawsuit, following Robertson’s death, his widow demanded that the estate and trust continue to pay one-half of her living expenses at the home as long as she continued to live there. However, his children, in their suit, state, “Robertson’s modest estate and trust would be drained dry” if that happened.

In addition to his age and illness, the lawsuit claims that Robertson was also taking a mix of medications that would affect his ability to understand any documents he was signing at the time the couple’s prenuptial agreement was put in place.

Beyond his time in The Band or with Bob Dylan, Robertson was also a celebrated guitarist who regularly played on Martin Scorsese’s film scores, including Killers of the Flower Moon. For his children, the lawsuit is all about protecting this legacy.

Zuccarini is yet to respond to the lawsuit.
