Ringo Starr reveals Sam Mendes agreed to cut parts of his Beatles biopic that he disagreed with
Ringo Starr has opened up about his level of input on the upcoming set of biopics on The Beatles.
The former Beatles drummer was speaking during an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on April 20th, ahead of the release of his latest solo album, Long Long Road, on April 24th.
However, the musician quickly turned his attention to various aspects of his legacy in the Fab Four, namely the biopics about each band member, being directed by Sam Mendes and set to hit cinemas in 2028.
When asked about how involved he has been in the process of making the films, Starr said he had had input on “my script”, referencing the four separate films being made to depict the life stories of each band member.
“I went over to England last year, and we spent two days together,” Starr added, alluding to the biopics’ director Mendes. “There were a few things I didn’t like,” he recalled, before noting that Mendes “was great” as he instantly got rid of those aspects.
Despite this, the musician also opened up about certain difficulties he has encountered during the process. “You know what I had to really do?”, he said. “Because it’s a script – I was, like, looking at it as a documentary. Once I finally said, ‘It’s not a documentary, it’s a film’, I could relax.”
Being coy about how the films will intersect each other, Starr said: “Only Sam can figure this out”.
During the interview, he also referenced his meeting with Barry Keoghan, who is set to play him, at his home last year. At the time, the actor admitted he “couldn’t look” at the drummer the first time they met as he was too nervous.
Despite this, Starr’s son Zak Starkey has previously said that his father had visited the set while filming and said that it looked “amazing”.
