Ricky Gervais announces new adult animation series, ‘Alley Cats’
Ricky Gervais has confirmed details of his new adult animation series, Alley Cats.
The new series, which will consist of six 15-minute episodes, is set to arrive on Netflix and will follow “the trials and tribulations of a group of feral British cats who seek companionship while ruminating about the struggles of everyday life”.
For the upcoming series, Gervais is teaming up with frequent collaborators from the British comedy scene, including Kerry Godliman, David Earl, Tom Basden, Diane Morgan, Tony Way, Andrew Brooke and Jo Hartley, who all appeared in After Life.
The series is co-directed by Gervais and Elliot Dear. Netflix shared in a statement that Alley Cats is “packed with Gervais’ signature style of heart and social commentary”.
Gervais jokingly said of the upcoming series: “I play a fat, lazy, rude, opinionated creature with fangs, who’s not as smart or brave as he thinks he is. So quite a stretch.”
The comedian previously told fans on social media of the project, “We started it, and it’s gonna take a long time ‘cos it’s animation. It won’t be finished until next year. I don’t think there’s anything like it”, according to the Radio Times.
He continued, “I did animation ‘cos I thought, ‘I’m getting old now’ and filming is a hard slog. I thought, ‘Animation, that’s easy.’ It’s not. I’ve been a fool.”
Alley Cats marks Gervais’ return to the realm of animation for the first time in more than a decade after previously teaming up with HBO and Channel 4 to produce The Ricky Gervais Show, which turned his podcasts with Karl Pilkington and Stephen Merchant.
Alley Cats is set for release on Netflix in 2026.
