Listen to Richard Hawley cover Bob Dylan for ‘Peaky Blinders’ finale
Richard Hawley has recorded a cover of Bob Dylan’s song ‘Ballad Of A Thin Man’ for the season five finale of the hit BBC television series Peaky Blinders.
The song, originally written and recorded by Dylan and released as part of his sixth album, Highway 61 Revisited, was first released in 1965. Tapping into a counterculture of the time, Dylan sings: “Disgusted by the old, excited by the new… elated by their discovery of others who shared their feelings,” which fits the narrative of the current Peaky Blinders storyline.
The show, which is opened by the sounds of Nick Cave’s ‘Red Right Hand’ and has previously featured the likes of Iggy Pop, David Bowie and, more recently, the combination of Savages and Anna Calvi, has turned to Hawley to put his unique spin on a Dylan classic: “Me, the band, our families – we’re all massive fans of the show, and of course Dylan,” Hawley told NME about the release.
Adding: “Dylan is the master, and it’s always a soulful joy to sing his songs. But to sing and play one of his finest works in the context of Peaky Blinders is a proper buzz for us.”
