Richard Hawley announces new album ‘In This City They Call You Love’
Richard Hawley has announced his tenth solo studio album, In This City They Call You Love, set for release on May 31st. The announcement is accompanied by a new single titled ‘Two For His Heels’.
In This City They Call You Love will mark Hawley’s tenth solo studio outing, following from the release of Further in 2019. The new record will comprise 12 tracks that return Hawley to his roots, with gorgeous ballads spotlighting his nuanced vocals and an ode to his home in Sheffield.
The record was created with its title already confirmed, as Hawley explained, “I’ve made three albums where I had the title before I’d even begun to record, where I had an agenda. One was Truelove’s Gutter. Another was Standing At The Sky’s Edge when I wanted tot run everything up and make the music a lot more aggressive, and then this one.”
“I wanted it to be multi-coloured in a way,” he explained, “Focusing on the voice and what voices can do together… I deliberately only placed a handful of guitar solos to keep it focused on voices, the song and space…”
Hawley’s first single ahead of the record is a fine example of that focus. Minimal blues-inspired instrumentation sits just below Hawley’s words on ‘Two For His Heels’, as he tells the tale of a deal on the dark edge of town. “Her Daddy got drunk and decided to kill,” he sings in the dramatic track, “If she don’t love me then nobody will.”
Physical copies of the record are now available to pre-order on CD or in three different vinyl colourways: blue, yellow, and black. The album is set for release on May 31st, 2024.
