Watch Richard Gere, Uma Thurman and Jacob Elordi star in trailer for Paul Schrader’s ‘Oh Canada’

Richard Gere, Uma Thurman and Jacob Elordi make a mean team on Paul Scrader’s latest feature, Oh Canada.

The project, which is an adaptation of Russell Banks’ novel Foregone, follows an ailing journalist, Leonard Fife, played by Richard Gere, who wants to share his story before it is too late.

Though the character had previously directed several lauded documentary exposes, his reputed avoidance of the Vietnam War draft and his past relationships eventually come undone throughout the movie, revealing thorny new details.

With wife Emma, played by Uma Thurman, present, he shares chaotic stories of his younger self, played by Jacob Elordi. Eventually, he pulls back the curtain of who he really is.

The movie was released in the US in 2024 and enjoyed its world premiere at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on May 17th, 2024. It was released on December 6th, 2024, by Kino Lorber, but has not yet been available in the UK and Ireland.

In 2024, the director opened up about where the project came from. He shared at that time, “When friend and author Russell Banks took ill I was weighing other story possibilities. I realised that mortality should be the subject.”

He continued, “Russell had researched and written a book about dying when he was healthy, titled Foregone. He’d wanted to call it Oh, Canada (there was a conflict with Richard Ford’s Canada), and asked if I would use his original title. So Foregone became Oh, Canada.

In the movie, Schrader, known for works like Hardcore, American Gigolo, and First Reformed, continues his sophisticated investigation into the public and private exteriors of life, morality and deceit during one of America’s darkest hours.

Film lovers might especially be interested in the film’s new launch in the UK and Ireland, as Jacob Elordi has since garnered a greater following after praise for his role in the recent Netflix movie, Frankenstein.

Oh, Canada will be available on UK and Ireland digital platforms on January 12th, 2026.
