Rebel Wilson elaborates on issues with Sacha Baron Cohen on ‘Brothers Grimsby’
The ongoing issues between Rebel Wilson and Sacha Baron Cohen continue to simmer, with the Brothers Grimsby co-stars sharing their sides of the story that saw the Australian the latter as an “asshole” in her new memoir Rebel Rising.
Even though the action comedy directed by The Incredible Hulk and Fast X‘s Louis Letterier was a risible effort that deservedly flopped at the box office, the after-effects have seen Wilson and Baron Cohen continue to air their grievances in public.
The Pitch Perfect actor revealed on Instagram that she “will not be bullied or silenced with high priced lawyer or PR crisis managers” when it came to naming the person who mistreated her on set, before eventually confirming it was the British comedian who later vehemently denied the claims.
Wilson elaborated by alleging Baron Cohen would regularly try to convince her to perform scenes involving nudity and sexual acts despite not being comfortable. Furthermore, she claimed the Academy Award-nominated writer and performer replied by releasing behind the scenes footage from the film that appeared to show her agreeing to his requests to take things in a more risqué direction.
Additionally, Wilson subsequently blasted the “unauthorised and misleading” footage as a means for Baron Cohen to continue “bullying and gaslighting me.” In a new interview with The Sunday Times, Wilson shared more on her Brothers Grimsby experience, claiming the costuming department wanted to treat her as little more than a punchline.
According to the star, the costumes were picked specifically to “see all the cellulite on my thighs,” and her upper body garments were selected “to show the fattest part of my arm”. She claims this choice made her to feel as though the wardrobe picked for her character existed solely to make her “something to be laughed at and degraded because of my size.”
Wilson said that even if “it’s one thing for someone who is fat to exploit their size for comedy,” it’s an entirely different matter “for somebody else to humiliate you.” As of yet, neither Baron Cohen or his representatives have responded to her latest comments, but they previously said her version of events was “demonstrably false”.
Rebel Rising: A Memoir doesn’t even hit shelves until April 2nd, but the Baron Cohen controversy has already become the incoming tome’s biggest talking point, and there may yet be more to come.
