Rebecca Ferguson: the perfect choice for Denis Villeneuve’s James Bond villain
After a bout of global panic about the fate of the James Bond series following its acquisition by Amazon, the announcement that Denis Villeneuve will direct the upcoming film is like music to many of our ears. For a minute, the future of the series was very touch-and-go, with concerns that it would turn into an IP slop machine under the control of Amazon with shoddy stories and money-grabbing limited series that destroy the integrity of a once-iconic franchise.
But Villeneuve helming the project signals towards a promising beginning, with the director being one of the few who can blend high art and commerce to create meaningful blockbuster projects that are both successful at the box office and masterfully constructed. After Villeneuve declared that Casino Royale was his favourite Bond film, arguably the greatest from the entire series, perhaps we can expect to see something similarly great and cutting-edge from the latest instalment to the series, even if we have no idea who the key players will be.
While people may be assured in the fate of the character while in the careful hands of Villeneuve, there are still many questions that leave the series on a cliffhanger. Who will play the titular anti-hero? Will Villeneuve’s involvement influence this decision? Can we glean any insights as to who this could be based on his past projects? There have been many names thrown into the ring when it comes to who will play the lead character, with everyone from Harris Dickinson to James Norton being added to the mix, but perhaps the involvement of Villeneuve leads to more clues as to who will play the iconic Bond villain.
There have been many genius Bond baddies over the years, with everyone from Mads Mikkelsen, Jonathan Pryce and Sophie Marceau joining the cast and adding new layers of calculated evil to the story. But in regards to the future of the series, Villeneuve has the opportunity (and power) to do something truly unexpected and daring, something that he has certainly done in the past and might leave some clues as to who it might be.
Villeneuve has always made bold decisions regarding the casting of his projects, whether it be Timothée Chalamet in Dune or Hugh Jackman as the revenge-crazed father in Prisoners. But while there are many great actors who could play the next Bond villain, there is one actor who recently worked with Villeneuve and would make a truly excellent villain: Rebecca Ferguson.
While Ferguson recently starred in the Dune series as Jessica, the actor has also played one of the most terrifying villains in recent years, with her portrayal of Rose the Hat in Doctor Sleep remains the most terrifying and genuinely disturbing aspect of the story. The film might have fallen short in many other areas, but Ferguson’s performance undoubtedly elevates it to new realms of fear, shining a light on her extraordinary talents to scare us to death.
As a result, Ferguson would no doubt slot in perfectly to the Bond world, with an effortless knack for darkness that is expertly revealed in Doctor Sleep, with a sinister gaze and manic cackle that genuinely made my blood curdle. While her character in the Dune world is slightly different, she also embodies a quiet depth and darkness that would also lend well to a new type of Bond villain, albeit a slightly more unconventional one.
Who knows how many people are in the running for this role or if it has already been decided, but given that Ferguson has already worked with Villeneuve and the series is generally very male-heavy, perhaps this would be the perfect opportunity for the creative team to capitalise on Ferguson’s talents and do something a little bit different.
