Yesterday Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington committed suicide. It was a day that marked the birthday of close friend Chris Cornell, the former Soundgarden frontman who also died by suicide just a few weeks ago.
At the age of just 41, police have confirmed that the singers body was found at a private residence in Palos Verdes Estates LA, and that the death was a result of hanging.
As reported by Mashable, some experts believe that huge occasions such as birthdays and anniversaries can be triggers of intense emotions for people who have lost loved ones to suicide: “Anniversaries bring up the fact that the person isn’t with us anymore,” says Julie Cerel, president of the American Association of Suicidology. “It becomes a time of risk for people who are hopeless and hurting.”
Bennington, who was extremely close friends with the late Cornell, penned an emotional letter in the wake of his death. Read the full letter, here:
I dreamt about the Beatles last night. I woke up with Rocky Raccoon playing in my head and a concerned look my wife’s face. She told me my friend had just passed away. Thoughts of you flooded my mind and I wept. I’m still weeping, with sadness, as well as gratitude for having shared some very special moments with you and your beautiful family. You have inspired me in many ways you could never have known. Your talent was pure and unrivalled. your voice was joy and pain, anger and forgiveness, love and heartache all wrapped up into one. I suppose that’s what we all are. You helped me understand that. I just watched a video oof you singing “A Day In The Life” by the Beatles and thought of my dream. I’d like to think you were saying goodbye in your own way. I can’t imagine a world without you in it. I pray you find peace in the next life. I send my love to your wife and children, friends and family.
Thank you for allowing me to be part of your life.
With all my love.
Bennington was known to have struggled with alcohol and drug addiction at different stages of his life, and had previously talked about suicide and the impact of sexual abuse as a child, although the reason for his suicide are currently unknown. His death also marks the birthday of his late friend Chris Cornell, who recently lost his life, link between the two deaths have been drawn already.
