Quick-fire Questions: 10 minutes with The Oidz
If you described any other band’s music as dumb, you’d be met with a swift middle finger. But if you call Leeds egg punk outfit The Oidz dumb, they’ll tell you you’re right on the money. Donning miscellaneous sunglasses and Minecraft merchandise on-stage, singing songs about incels and intergalactic masturbation, and sharing their demos via hand-made tapes and sneaky Google Drive links, The Oidz thrive in silliness and stupidity.
The project was initially intended to be a short-term thing. Inspired by the likes of The Coneheads and Snõõper, Fuzz Lightyear frontman Ben Parry recruited fellow egg enthusiasts Luc Gibbons, Jack Devlin and Summer Crane on drums, bass and vocals respectively. The plan was to create a bunch of short, fast and frantic tunes in a series of beer-fuelled basement writing sessions, play a couple of shows, and then disband a couple of months later.
Those sessions spawned a series of scuzzy four-track recordings; each song propelled forward by Gibbons’ rapid drumming and riffs that are equal parts catchy and silly. Crane’s voice is pushed through pedals, wobbly and alien-like as she tells ridiculous tales of cryptid boyfriends and hoarders. The self-described “Ritalin anthems” have been steadily doing the rounds in the Leeds scene, shared with friends via physical tales and with non-friends through a Google Drive link.
The Oidz played their debut show with Prison Affair at Mabgate Bleach earlier this year, quickly garnering a cult live following that has since landed them shows with the equally silly Cumgirl8 and Leeds DIY stalwarts Thank. And now, five months in, they seem to have shrugged off that initial plan to break up. They’re having way too much fun. Before The Oidz usher in a long-awaited egg revolution in the UK, we caught up with the band to get their opinions on sex scenes, Reddit, and whatever egg punk is.
Quick-fire Questions with The Oidz:
1. What exactly is egg-punk?
Ben: “Dumb, fast, stupid punk invented by coneheads in 2015. Vastly improved upon by us in 2024.”
Summer: “It’s like this“.
2. Describe The Oidz in three words.
Summer: “Whatever ADD stands for.”
Ben: “Chocolate milk rock.”
3. Have you ever cried at a gig?

Jack: “I cry at every gig I attend. Especially if we’re on the bill”.

Summer: “Probs just my friends so we can hang out. And Rhett and Link from Good Mythical Morning.”
5. What’s the best venue in the world?
Ben: “Mabgate Bleach is the greatest venue of all time. Drinking beers there is what I imagine going to church feels like.”
Jack: “Bleach is our first love, but a close second would probably be Brudenell Social Club.”
6. What song do you wish you had written?
Luc: “The Office theme. It’s probably the only egg punk theme tune.”
Ben: “‘Let Us Play Your Party’ by The Spits or ‘Riff Raff’ by AC/DC.”
7. What are you listening to right now?
Jack: “Playstation 2-era inspired Ambient Jungle Mixes on YouTube at 2am.”
Summer: “The extraction fan in my bathroom and that annoying high-pitched noise that comes from your laptop charger when plugged into an extension cord that sounds like your laptop charger is gonna start a fire.”

Luc: “Awesome.”
15. How much time do you spend on Reddit?
Summer: “I haven’t posted in seven years, but I’d die for Shayne Topp of Smosh Reddit stories. I actually had a dream last night that he taught me to swim and fell in love with me and seduced me in a ’90s rom-com type way.”
Luc: “About as much time as I spend behind the wheel of an HGV, careering at 85 mph down a busy high street.”
