Quick-fire Questions: 10 minutes with Walt Disco
Have you ever heard someone and just instinctively thought that they’ve been here before? From a sonic perspective, that’s the definite impression of feeling when you hear Walt Disco, a reinventing blend of classic and new forces from David Bowie to St Vincent, the Talking Heads to CMAT. It’s hard to believe that the Glasgow glam rockers are only entering their fifth year as an outfit because their sound already holds such texture and reverential spirit that it seems they’ve been playing this game a lot longer.
Already having mastered the Glasgow circuit and topping the bill of its slew of DIY gigs and festivals plenty of times, the five-piece possess more than enough charisma and unfiltered originality to have what it takes to become one of the country’s biggest rock exports in the coming years. It again boils down to the notion that they may only be a band in their twenties, but they could have easily transplanted into any of the major sonic scenes over the past half a century and made themselves at home, whether it was glam rock or new wave or Britpop.
Off the back of their last two albums – 2022’s breakout Unlearning and last year’s timeless effort, The Warping – it’s clear Walt Disco have even bigger sights set on their horizon. They’re shortly heading Stateside to support British electronic stalwarts Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD) and play some of their own headline shows, where tastes of new music and the next chapter for the band will have their first rodeo.
Evidently, there’s a lot in the pipeline, but before then, we sat down with lead vocalist Jocelyn Si and drummer Jack Martin to ask the truly burning questions for a band about to make it big, like their guilty pleasures and favourite takeaways. World domination could be on the cards, but let’s face it – you’re nothing if we don’t know the real inner workings of your mind.
