Pulp debut new song during Brooklyn show

Pulp played a brand new song, ‘You’ve Got To Have Love’, during a performance in Brooklyn, New York, last night. It was one of several new songs they have debuted live recently.

The Sheffield-born band took to the stage at Brooklyn’s Kings Theatre in New York as part of their ‘This Is What We Do for an Encore’ tour. Their setlist featured a number of Pulp classics, including ‘Disco 2000′ and ‘Common People’, which appeared in the band’s first encore.

Pulp then kicked off their second encore with a brand-new track. “It’s quite an old song, but we never finished it,” singer Jarvis Cocker explained to the audience. “Hopefully, we have it now.” He went on to introduce the song as ‘You’ve Got To Have Love’ before shrugging, “It’s true”.

The song features repeated declarations of the title affirmation over gorgeous guitar twangs and soaring strings. In the lyrics, Cocker talks about the necessity of love. “Without love, you’re just making a fool of yourself,” he sings.

‘You’ve Got To Have Love’ isn’t the only new song that Pulp have performed for the first time on their current tour. They debuted a new track called ‘My Sex’ during their show in Toronto and played a track called ‘Spike Island’ for the first time in Chicago.

The ‘This Is What We Do for an Encore’ tour has been going on since last spring. The band played a series of shows in their homeland of the United Kingdom last year, including festivals like TRNSMT and Latitude.

The Britpop band are currently taking the tour across North America, with shows scheduled in San Francisco and Los Angeles for the remainder of September. They will also play at rockin’ on sonic in Japan next January.

Though they have debuted a number of new tracks during this tour, the band are yet to reveal if a new record is in the works. Pulp haven’t shared a full album of new material in over two decades, since the release of We Love Life in 2001.

Since then, Cocker has released a number of projects as a solo artist, beginning with the self-titled Jarvis in 2006. He has released several more solo albums since then, most recently returning with the French pop-inspired Chansons d’Ennui Tip-Top in 2021.

Cocker has also ventured into the world of film composition. He created the soundtrack album for Adam Kay’s miniseries This Is Going to Hurt in 2022.
