Prince musical, ‘Purple Rain’, heading to Broadway in 2027
Prince musical Purple Rain is set to arrive on Broadway in 2027.
It has found a home at the Majestic Theatre in New York, with previews set to begin on March 12th, 2027, before it officially opens on April 12th.
Previously, the musical was on stage at the Hennepin Theatre Trust’s State Theatre in 2024 and 2025 in Prince’s hometown, Minneapolis, but is now finally set to take the leap to the Big Apple.
In total, it will consist of more than 20 songs from the ‘Purple One’s’ immense back catalogue, such as the titular ‘Purple Rain’, ‘When Doves Cry’, ‘I Would Die 4 U’, ‘Take Me with U’, ‘Lets Go Crazy’, and ‘I Would Die 4 U’.
Saheem Ali is on directorial duties, Peter Duchan has penned a book based on the original 1984 screenplay, Ebony Williams is choreographing the production, and Jason Michael Webb is tasked with music supervision, arrangements and orchestrations.
Meanwhile, Prince’s longtime collaborators Bobby Z and Morris Hayes will serve as musical supervisors for the Broadway musical.
Tickets are set to go on sale in September. Casting is due to be announced at a later date.
The synopsis, which follows the same plot as the film, reads, “Minneapolis, 1984. A new era of music television is creating overnight stars. A magnetic young performer known as ‘The Kid’ seems like the perfect frontman to lead his bandmates to stardom.”
It adds, “But when his past threatens everything he’s built, he’ll have to sing his way out of the darkness and into the spotlight where he belongs.”
Producer Orin Wolf has said of the upcoming Broadway run, “Prince is, without doubt, one of the rarest, most brilliant musicians we’ve ever had. What he accomplished with Purple Rain — the song, the album and the film — is a testament to the art of making music and showcases it at the highest level.”
Wolf added, “Having worked with Saheem Ali on Buena Vista Social Club, I’ve seen how he prioritizes serving the music, and I can’t wait to watch him, Peter Duchan, Ebony Williams, and Jason Michael Webb use Prince’s legendary music as the engine for this new production. It will be every bit as exciting for audiences today as it was when we first heard these songs on our boom boxes.”
