There’s something curious about Post Malone; the rapper has always operated outside the known spectrums of hip hop, delivering tracks that are flecked with the outlier sensibilities of some of the more mainstream genres of pop, country and indie rock. It’s enough to see Malone become one of the frontrunners of the new age of hip hop, managing to create a sound that was both inclusive and authentic.
One of the reasons Malone has achieved such a feat was because of his sincere love of all types of music. Unlike some sections of the music world, who stay religiously strict in who and what they will allow themselves to align with, Malone has always been open about his love for different kinds of music, especially metal. Though he recently collaborated with the icon Ozzy Osbourne, Malone’s love affair stretches back much further after sharing that he had a high school metal band named Ashley’s Arrival. It was something that became evident last year.
2020 was a tough year for anybody and everybody, leaving what would have first been a simple conversation reduced to a quick Zoom call. Post Malone found himself a part of such a Zoom call when he was invited by Megadeth bassist David Ellefson and his business partner Thom Hazaert. Knowing what a huge fan of metal Malone was, Ellefson invited the rapper on to the show to ask him who his favourite metal bands were. Naturally, Malone wouldn’t be quiet about his response.
“I’d say y’all. I mean, Megadeth has gotta be the best for me,” claimed Malone. “I love Megadeth, I love Metallica… I love… Fuck, man. So much shit… I love Pantera. I got to meet Phil [Anselmo] backstage at a show, and he’s a cool-ass dude, and he talks like this [adopts a deep voice]. I’m, like, dude, it’s gotta hurt to talk [like that], but he’s still fucking got it.”
It’s a pretty solid pick for a top three in the world of metal, you’d be hard-pressed to find a fan who didn’t count those three as the triumvirate of the metal world, and Malone should know. His fandom isn’t restricted to those bands, despite his “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott tattoo. He also picked up a song with Ozzy Osbourne in 2019 titled ‘Take What You Want’ and shared some special moments with Slayer at their Los Angeles show.
It was there that Malone met Phil Anselmo, who posted a pic with the rapper, captioning it: “New blood meets old blood… it was a real pleasure to meet @postmalone, genuine & genuinely nice kid. The nieces & nephews are definitely jealous.”
Malone has often claimed that it was Anselmo, alongside bands like AC/DC and Metallica that helped him learn guitar, as he would stay up and watch YouTube videos on how to play like his heroes.
It shows that while the mediums may change, the central crux of music providing a platform for worldwide connection has never waned. Below, we’ve pulled together a playlist of Post Malone’s favourite metal bands.
