Phil Collins in hospital not hospice care, representative clarifies
After a recent rumour that Phil Collins is currently in hospice care went viral on social media, a rep for the musician has clarified that, though that is not the case, he is currently in hospital.
After Collins retired from Genesis in 2022 at a farewell show, which he had to remain seated for, fans have been wary of his health. A rumour recently circulated online that the former drummer and singer-songwriter is now in a hospice, usually reserved for those at the end of life.
However, a spokesperson for Phil Collins told TMZ that this is not the case. The rep clarified that Collins is currently in the hospital for a knee surgery.
The ‘You Can’t Hurry Love’ singer also has drop-foot, which left him with no sensation in one of his feet. Since 2015, Collins has used a cane to walk after undergoing a spinal procedure.
Collins has always been willing to talk about his health struggles. Nerve damage stemming from a 2007 spinal injury has prevented Collins from drumming, and earlier this year, he admitted to holding off on recording new music as he has been “very sick” as of late.
In a 2024 documentary, Phil Collins: Drummer First, the musician opened up about how his health has impacted his craftsmanship. “I’ve spent all my life playing drums. To suddenly not be able to do that is a shock,” he said in the film.
He added, “If I can’t do what I did as well as I did it, I’d rather relax and not do anything. If I wake up one day and I can hold a pair of drumsticks, then I’ll have a crack at it. But I just feel like I’ve used up my air miles.”
The music industry has seen plenty of tragic deaths this past week, with the internet coming together to mourn icons such as Ozzy Osbourne, Chuck Mangione and Ghana musician Daddy Lumba.
