Peter Mullan attacked while trying to save women from assault
Scottish actor and director Peter Mullan was headbutted while attempting to save a woman from being assaulted by her partner.
Dylan Bennet, aged 29, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after pleading guilty to assaulting Mullan and the woman.
The incident took place outside the O2 Academy in Glasgow on September 20th, 2025.
Per The Herald, Bennet was captured on CCTV chasing the woman before assaulting her when Mullan, who was walking by, intervened.
Fiscal Josh Dowie told Glasgow Sheriff Court: “He was seen to seize her to the neck and violently shook her back and forward and held her for 10 seconds. At this time Mr Mullan was walking by them and noticed the woman to be upset and crying.”
Dowie continued, “Mr Mullan turned around towards Bennet and the woman to see him assaulting her. He turned back and intervened then stood between them.”
He then explained that Mullen told Bennet that the police had been called to the scene and “at this point he was headbutted”.
The court also heard that Bennet brandished a glass bottle at Mullen and his partner. By the time the police arrived, he had been apprehended on the ground by security staff at the Glaswegian venue.
Tony Callaghan, who was defending Bennet in court, claimed that his client’s actions were influenced by drugs and alcohol, stating, “He went to get more drink and returned to the party. An argument developed between himself and his partner but they don’t know what it was about.”
Callaghan added on behalf of Bennet, “He deeply regrets his involvement in this incident, especially to the innocent bystander.”
Mullan’s acting career has seen him feature in beloved films such as I, Swear, Trainspotting, and Braveheart, as well as hit series, including Westworld and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. He’s also an acclaimed director who won the Golden Lion at Cannes in 2002 for The Magdalene Sisters.
