Watch Billy Corgan join Joy Division's Peter Hook to perform 'Love Will Tear Us Apart'

There are few songs as ubiquitously adored as Joy Division’s masterpiece ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’. There’s hardly a soul in the music scene that can’t get on board with the song and one of it’s biggest advocates, Billy Corgan once performed the track with aplomb.

A massive fan of Joy Division since his teens, Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan has had a long love affair with the group that offered so much to the dejected and disparaged of society.

It meant when Peter Hook the bassist in both Joy Division and the band that continued on after the tragic death of JD lead singer, Ian Curtis, New Order asked Corgan to be a part of proceedings on a 2014 tour, the singer jumped at the chance.

It wasn’t the first time the two groups had crossed over. In 2001 with New Order touring America the group invited Corgan—who was then working on solo projects—to open for them in support of New Order’s record Get Ready. It was a match made in heaven.

So when Peter Hook’s own tour with the Light rolled through Corgan’s hometown of Chicago in 2014 there was a bubble of excitement that perhaps these two great artists would again cross paths. And they did.

Hook invited Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan and Jeff Schroeder to join him on stage for an encore performance of the iconic Joy Division song ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’. While the quality of Corgan’s vocal is up for debate (to be honest, who is going to match Curtis’ original?) what it did offer was a satisfying full circle.

Here was Billy Corgan on stage singing a song that doubtless inspired him as a kid to a young audience awaiting their own inspiration. While they may be looking for some newer tunes it’s always good to remind them of the glorious past.
