Peggy Gou releases new single 'Nabi' with Oh Hyuk

German-South Korean DJ Peggy Gou has released a new single featuring Hyukoh lead singer Oh Hyuk, the pulse-pounding ‘Nabi’.

“When people hear my songs, I want them to feel hope, positivity, good energy,” Gou explains in a press release. “This is especially the case with ‘Nabi’. We’ve all been through so much over the last year and it’s about facing up to the problems and negativity in our lives and learning how to deal with it. It’s also about acceptance—accepting that it’s OK to feel this way. When people hear ‘Nabi,’ they’ll hopefully feel the same sense of healing—that feeling that everything’s going to be OK—that I feel when I listen to the songs that inspired it.”

“It’s been a long time since COVID-19 has adapted to the changes it has made in society,” Oh Hyuk adds in his own statement. “It contains the desire to become a butterfly and fly away from the beautiful days before.”

“Nabi”, for those ignorant of the Korean language like myself, means “butterfly”. The track itself is a light, breezy, ’80s indebted slice of electronic house music that is obviously custom made for easing us back into good times on a public platform.

Gou built her reputation through killer DJ sets around the world, including stops at festivals like Coachella and Glastonbury. ‘Starry Night’, her 2019 track, found a decent amount of traction worldwide, and ‘Nabi’ is the latest attempt to keep that momentum going.

Hyukoh, meanwhile, were planning on breaking the American market in 2020 before coronavirus made that impossible. Earlier this year, bass player Im Dong-geon was conscripted into mandatory military service in 2021, putting his immediate future with the band in a state of limbo. It’s a major setback from a band who carved out a unique niche in the global Korean music market.
