Pearl Jam's Jeff Ament announces new solo album

Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament has announced a new solo album entitled I Should Be Outside, his fourth overall and first since 2018’s Heaven/Hell.

If you are unfamiliar with Ament’s solo work, he mainly goes Prince mode by recording almost every instrument, besides drums and occasional guest appearances from friends, himself. The result is a little more influenced by 1980s new wave and ’70s punk rock than the classic rock-indebted tunes of Pearl Jam, but Ament still retains the hard rock edge that he knows is his bread and butter.

The new album takes inspiration from his lifelong dalliances with visual art, as well as his experiences with coronavirus over the past year. “Days of isolating and watching the news of the destruction courtesy the virus (and the ineptitude of our leadership or as named here, the American Death Squad) made for vivid dreams and a helplessness,” Ament explains in a post for Pearl Jam’s 10 Club newsletter. “These were some of the first songs out of the gate. Raw and succinct.”

“This interruption gives us each a new chance at a better life moving forward,” Ament continues. “For me, this centres on creating and being outside more.”

For his day job, Ament and Pearl Jam have announced a 2022 European tour that will feature dates at the Rock Werchter Festival, Lollapalooza Stockholm, Pinkpop Festival, and two dates a Hyde Park in London. The tour was originally scheduled for 2020.
