Pavement movie, ‘Pavements’, confirmed for streaming on MUBI
The much-vaunted movie Pavements, which charts the story of the cult 1990s American indie band Pavement, has finally received a date for theatrical release following a six-month stint at film festivals.
Although the full details or a trailer have not yet been released for the film, it is set to open on May 2nd at New York’s Film Forum with a special event featuring the cast, crew, and surprise guests. From there, MUBI will then take over the exclusive streaming rights.
Billed as an artistic blend of documentary and fictionalised biopic, the true extent of the meta layers of Pavements have yet to be revealed in full since its premiere last July at the Venice Film Festival.
It has been hinted at through the release of a trailer for a fake musical biopic called Range Life: A Pavement Story, starring Stranger Things’s Joe Keery as Pavement frontman Stephen Malkmus.
However, explaining later that Range Life was not a full film and instead just an aspect of Pavements, the band said: “Much as we would love to see a full feature film starring Joe Keery as the iconic Stephen Malkmus, our reality just isn’t ready to be changed forever by a film of such significant import.”
They continued: “Instead, we will be releasing the critically-acclaimed film Pavements, which features footage from the too-good-to-be-true Range Life, rooted in the context of Pavements’ boundary-shredding exploration of art and life.”
The film is also alleged to feature the band’s first new song in some 25 years, making the long-awaited public release of Pavements in May – in whatever form it may take – one that is decidedly invigorating excitement among the indie cult masses.
