Paul McCartney reveals the 154 songs that will feature in his new memoir, ‘The Lyrics’
Sir Paul McCartney has excited fans by revealing the names of the 154 songs that will feature in his upcoming career-spanning memoir, The Lyrics. The book was announced earlier this year and is set for release on November 2. It will cross his entire life and career, from his earliest boyhood compositions to classics by the Beatles, Wings and extensive solo career.
There will also be previously unseen drafts, letters and pictures from McCartney’s dense personal archive. The book will be arranged alphabetically to provide a vivid journey with many twists and turns rather than a regimented chronological record.
The book establishes comprehensive texts of the songs’ lyrics for the time. In such an exciting move by McCartney, it also describes the circumstances in which they were written, the people and places that inspired them, and what he thinks of them retrospectively. In the foreword to The Lyrics, he reveals: “More often than I can count, I’ve been asked if I would write an autobiography, but the time has never been right.”
McCartney continues: “The one thing I’ve always managed to do, whether at home or on the road, is to write new songs. I know that some people, when they get to a certain age, like to go to a diary to recall day-to-day events from the past, but I have no such notebooks. What I do have are my songs, hundreds of them, which I’ve learned serve much the same purpose. And these songs span my entire life.
“I hope that what I’ve written will show people something about my songs and my life which they haven’t seen before. I’ve tried to say something about how the music happens and what it means to me and I hope what it may mean to others too.”
Furthermore, to accompany the book’s release, the esteemed British Library has announced it will be curating a free exhibition entitled ‘Paul McCartney: The Lyrics’ between November 5, 2021, and March 13, 2022.
