An old school book belonging to Beatles icon Paul McCartney, with grades marked by his teachers, is to be auctioned off in Merseyside.

Being sold by Omega auctions, lists the item as “an original school book containing English essays written by a young McCartney whilst in Alan “Dusty” Durban’s class at the Liverpool Institute High School for Boys.”

The book contains 22 pages of essays written by McCartney, the focus being on subjects such as Thomas Hardy ‘Return of The Native’ and ‘Milton’s Paradise Lost’. Along with that, the book also contains four pages of notes on essays.

The five essays included feature markings and grades by McCartney’s teacher Mr Durband. In Mark Lewisohn’s book, The Beatles: Tune In, the author writes: “Paul was now in his final year at the ‘Inny’, class 6AM2, one of the oldest boys in the school… was now deep into his Dusty Durband-inspired literary phase. ‘I did most of my reading in (that) little period of my life… I thought it was a bit swotty, a good image… I felt like I was at university.'”

Being the loveable rogue that he is, the back of the school book contains a doodle of a man smoking.

The auction house estimating that book will reach a final figure in excess of £4,000 and £6,000.
