Paul McCartney pays emotional tribute to Rob Reiner: “Life can be so unfair”
Paul McCartney has paid tribute to the iconic Hollywood director Rob Reiner, saying, “Life can be so unfair”.
Reiner and his wife, Michele, were tragically found dead at their home in Brentwood, Los Angeles, on December 14th, in what police are currently investigating as an “apparent homicide”.
The couple’s son, Nick Reiner, has been confirmed to be in custody, but it has not been made clear whether this is connected to the deaths or to another charge.
Dozens of tributes have poured in for the When Harry Met Sally director and his wife from across the Hollywood and political worlds, with McCartney the latest to offer words to honour Reiner.
The former Beatle recently worked with Reiner when he made a cameo appearance in Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, which was released in September this year.
Taking to social media, McCartney said: “What a tragedy the death of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, is. It is so shocking in many ways but for me especially so, because over the last year I had been working with him. He directed me in ‘Spinal Tap II: The End Continues’. He was such an upbeat, lovable man.”
He added: “Life can be so unfair and this tragedy proves it. His father, Carl Reiner, was a great humourist before him and Rob followed in his dad’s footsteps doing a terrific job making many great films. I will always have fond memories of Rob and the idea that he and his wife will no longer be in the world with us is heartbreaking.”
McCartney signed off his statement by saying: “Thanks for all the humour, Rob. Rest in Peace. Love Paul,” while sharing a picture of the two on the set of the most recent Spinal Tap film.
Many other tributes have been paid to Reiner and his wife, including from former US President Barack Obama, and Spinal Tap star Christopher Guest with his wife, Jamie Lee Curtis.
The couple said in part: “Numb and sad and shocked about the violent, tragic deaths of our dear friends Rob and Michele Singer Reiner and our ONLY focus and care right now is for their children and immediate families and we will offer all support possible to help them.”
