Patti Smith announces 50th anniversary re-release of ‘Horses’ with unreleased songs
Patti Smith has officially announced a vinyl and CD release in celebration of the 50th anniversary of her debut Horses. It will feature eight unreleased songs as well as previously unreleased outtakes and rarities.
Released in 1975, Horses is nearing its 50th anniversary. Despite middling reception at the time, it is now regarded as one of the most important albums of the decade.
Smith recently announced a huge run of dates to celebrate the seminal debut, which will soon be performed in its entirety in seven European cities and nine American cities later this year. This includes two shows at the London Palladium on October 12th and 13th, and shows in Dublin, Madrid, Bergamo, Brussels, Oslo, and Paris on the European leg of the tour.
Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, has now announced that a 2-LP and 2-CD set is coming on October 10th.
The exciting release will feature the iconic original album remastered directly from the original 1/4” master tapes, as well as Patti Smith’s 1975 RCA audition tape.
If this isn’t enough for Smith fans, her memoir, Bread of Angels, is coming on November 4th via Random House Publishing. Her 2010 written release, Just Kids, has enjoyed renewed acclaim in 2025.
On August 22nd, Smith released one of the bonus tracks onto all streaming platforms. ‘Snowball’ was first performed in May of 1975, live at the WBAI radio station in New York City. It is among the seven other bonus tracks, such as ‘Distant Fingers’ and ‘Break It Up’.
