Australian five-piece have announced their return with their luxurious new single, ‘Free’.
The European-based group arrived in 2018 with their eponymous debut album, which they followed up with a live album last year, but ‘Free’ officially marks the start of the second chapter for Parcels. They are in a buoyant mood on the new track, which will pop a spring in your step, as you find yourself singing along to the chorus, “I feel this need to be free
Can we feel, and be real?”
The track was written in the middle of the pandemic last year, and the band found themselves scattered across the world in beautiful locations ranging from Paris to Australia. The downbeat lyrics are counteracted by Parcels, who usher in upbeat jazzy arrangements that swirl around in your head for hours and acts as a sweet juxtaposition.
“Jules wrote this song one morning when we were in lockdown, split up across separate sides of the globe,” the band said in a statement. “While the lyrics appeared to grapple with complications in his long-distance relationships, it couldn’t help but feel like a letter to the rest of the band at the same time.
“To express oneself openly and truly without fear is a freedom many of us don’t even realise we’re without. Recognising it is an uplifting moment because then we can start to work on it. In Jules’ case, this manifested in ‘Free’ – a hopeful call across the world for vulnerability and realness from a sunny garden in Mullumbimby.”
‘Free’ arrives after a three-year absence of new material from Parcels, and they’ve not missed a beat. Now everything in the world is opening up again; the time feels suitable for a track like ‘Free’ to arrive, which leaves you feeling optimistic for the summer days that lie ahead.
