Panda Bear and Sonic Boom announce second album, ‘A ? Of When’

Panda Bear and Sonic Boom have announced their second collaborative album, A ? Of When. However, the offering will not be available on streaming platforms.

The new record, which will be released on July 10th through Domino Records, follows on from their 2022 debut album, Reset.

The release from Panda Bear, real name Noah Lennox, and Sonic Boom, the alias of Pete Kember, will include new tracks ‘Graveyard’ and ‘Lucky Charm’, which were previously released as a Record Store Day exclusive seven-inch earlier this year.

The album, which was built using loops of harp, steel drum sequences, pedal steel, and mariachi instrumentation, features contributions from Mexico City’s Mariachi 2000 De Cutberto Pérez, harpist Mary Lattimore, British multi-instrumentalist Daniel O’Sullivan, and “Steel Witch” Zena Kay.

The ten-track LP will be made available to fans via vinyl, CD, cassette, and digital download only. The duo have not planned a streaming release; speaking more generally about what the decision says about the creative industry, they have elaborated, “AI slop becomes an AI slope. Algorithm tables & algorithms tumble. We’re taking things a little off piste.”

In that vein, a press release shares that the project is about “that inexorable moment when all the shit we’ve fucked up finally catches up with us.”

More specifically, the pair will delve into online exhaustion and pervasive depression, with political chicanery and ecological sustainability, all while advocating for respecting the power of luck and giving one another grace.

Far Out gave their previous collaboration, Reset, a glowing four-and-a-half stars, deeming the project “one of the most mind-bending releases of the summer.”
