Oscars confirms move to new location in Los Angeles

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have confirmed that the Oscars will be moving to the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.

Since 2002, the Dolby Theater has been home to the biggest night of the year for the movie industry, but that will all change from 2029.

The Peacock Theater, which will become known as L.A. Live, have agreed a deal through AEG to host the Oscars from 2029 to 2039.

Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy president Lynette Howell Taylor said in a statement, “We are thrilled to partner with a global powerhouse like AEG. Their track record for building and operating technologically sophisticated live performance venues is unrivaled.”

Their message continued, “For the 101st Oscars and beyond, the Academy looks forward to closely collaborating with AEG to make L.A. LIVE the perfect backdrop for our global celebration of cinema, both for our live in-theater audience and for film fans around the world.”

Meanwhile, Todd Goldstein, chief revenue officer at AEG, who own the Los Angeles venue, said, “L.A. LIVE was built to host the moments that define culture, and there is no greater global stage than the Oscars.”

Goldstein also shared his ambition to “create an environment that celebrates creativity, honors excellence, and delivers an unforgettable experience for movie fans everywhere.”

It’s not just the location of the Oscars that is set to change in 2029 for the 101st edition of the Academy Awards; it will also be shown on YouTube rather than a traditional broadcaster for the first time in its history.

In December, the Academy confirmed its partnership with YouTube, which is initially set to run through until 2033.

At the time, the Academy explained they are “an international organization and this partnership will allow us to expand access to the work of the Academy to the largest worldwide audience possible — which will be beneficial for our Academy members and the film community.”
