Oscars 2026: Timothée Chalamet breaks 72-year record
As the 2026 Oscar nominations were announced, Marty Supreme superstar Timothée Chalamet has become the youngest actor ever to have three nominations since Marlon Brando back in 1954.
Chalamet is also the youngest person ever to be double-nominated for producing and acting in the same year.
The new Josh Safdie box-office hit is inspired by the true story of Marty Reisman, a ping-pong prodigy in 1950s New York. Chalamet’s Marty Mauser hustles his way across the city in an attempt to make it to the ping-pong world championships.
Nominations for the coveted ‘Best Actor in a Leading Role’ will be fought out between Marty Supreme’s Chalamet, One Battle After Another’s Leonardo DiCaprio, The Secret Agent’s Wagner Moura, Blue Moon’s Ethan Hawke, and Michael B Jordan for Sinners.
Much to his dismay, Chalamet narrowly missed out on the Oscar last year. His portrayal of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown was pipped by Adrien Brody’s work in The Brutalist.
He also missed out in 2018, when he was nominated for his performance in Call Me by Your Name. Instead, the Oscar went to Gary Oldman for Darkest Hour.
If Chalamet is to take home the Oscar, he will become the second-youngest best actor winner ever. He will follow behind Brody’s 2003 triumph for his role in The Pianist.
This record falls in line with Chalamet’s intentions, which he delineated clearly in a speech from last year’s SAG Awards, where he claimed that he was “in pursuit of greatness.”
Brando, who has eight nominations across his career, was nominated in 1951 for A Streetcar Named Desire, in 1952 for Viva Zapata!, in 1953 for Julius Caesar, and again in 1954 for On the Waterfront, which he won at the age of 30, the same age as the Little Women actor currently.
The Oscars will take place on March 15th. Watch the official trailer for Marty Supreme below.
