Oscars 2026: ‘Sentimental Value’ star Stellan Skarsgård makes Oscars history

Stellan Skarsgård has become the first-ever actor to receive a ‘Best Supporting Actor’ nomination for an international film for his work in Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value.

The tender movie follows sisters, Nora and Agnes, who reunite with their estranged father, a renowned director, who offers Nora a star role in his comeback film.

This is Skarsgård’s first-ever Oscar nomination. He is joined in the category by fellow nominees Frankenstein’s Jacob Elordi, One Battle After Another’s Benicio Del Toro and Sean Penn, as well as Sinners actor Delroy Lindi.

This nomination means Skarsgård has broken the curious spell that has meant that, in the 97 years of Academy Awards, the ‘Best Supporting Actor’ nomination has never gone to an actor in an international film.

However, five actors have been cited in this category for such non-English-language work in American-produced films, three of whom have won: John Mills in Ryan’s Daughter, Robert De Niro in The Godfather Part II, Graham Greene in Dances With Wolves, Benicio Del Toro in Traffic, and Troy Kotsur in CODA.

Sentimental Value was also nominated in several other categories. Actors Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas and Elle Fanning will be competing against each other for ‘Best Supporting Actress’. Renate Reinsve was nominated for ‘Best Actress in a Leading Role’.

Additionally, it was nominated for ‘Best International Film’; it will compete against It Was Just An Accident, Sentimental Value, Sirát, and The Voice of Hind Rijab.

Far Out deemed Sentimental Value the third best movie of 2025, observing, “Sentimental Value is the perfect blend of drama and humour, highlighting the comedy to be found in some of life’s bleakest moments, never letting this ruin the tension he creates. Beautifully shot and led by some great performances, especially from Skarsgård and Reinsve, Trier has done it again.”

The Oscars will take place on March 15th. Watch the official trailer for Sentimental Value below.
