Oscars 2026: Paul Thomas Anderson wins ‘Best Director’ for ‘One Battle After Another’

Paul Thomas Anderson has been directing acclaimed films for three decades, but he’s finally won his first Oscar for ‘Best Director’ with One Battle After Another, his most celebrated work to date.

It may have been a heavily forecasted victory, but Paul Thomas Anderson’s win at the Academy Awards has been many years in the making.

It marks Anderson’s first victory in the category after picking up previous nominations for There Will Be Blood, Phantom Thread, and Licorice Pizza.

While the notion of Anderson receiving a ‘career honour’ for his impressive body of work was suggested before One Battle After Another even premiered, he steamrolled through the award season with victories at virtually every ceremony, including the Directors Guild of America, Golden Globes, and Baftas.

Despite being considered to be the frontrunner, Anderson faced an impressive list of competitors, including Ryan Coogler for Sinners, Joachim Trier for Sentimental Value, Josh Safdie for Marty Supreme, and Chloe Zhao for Hamnet.

Anderson’s journey with the Academy Awards began when his sophomore feature, Boogie Nights, earned him a nomination for ‘Best Original Screenplay’ at the 70th edition.

“You make a guy work hard for one of these,” he said in his acceptance speech, before paying tribute to a friend. “I share this with a friend of mine on the other side of the shadows, named Andrew Sumner,” the filmmaker added. “He’s up in a big bar in the sky right now, and he’s having a gin and tonic, and he is so happy with me.”

While he has directed Oscar-winning films, including There Will Be Blood, One Battle After Another is the first time he has been individually recognized.

It’s the second of Anderson’s films to be adapted from a Thomas Pynchon novel, following Inherent Vice, but his interpretation of Vineland is a bold remix of the original material. In the wake of current events and the simmering socio-political tensions in the United States, his vision for One Battle After Another feels more prophetic than ever.

One Battle After Another was earmarked for success based on the broad support from film critics, but unlike previous ‘Best Director’ winners, it did not debut at a festival. Not that it needed the hype, with the film becoming Anderson’s highest-grossing release ever, and it rode that wave all the way to the Oscars.
