The anticipation is over for the biggest night of awards season, with the Oscars taking place in Los Angeles.

After months of discussion and talking points, the 98th Academy Awards are taking place at the Dolby Theatre, as Sinners looks to make Oscars history, Timothée Chalamet vies to win his first Academy Award, and Paul Thomas Anderson also seems set on winning his first ‘Best Director’ award.

In a few short hours, all these answers will be revealed, and Far Out will be with you every step of the way, delivering live coverage.

Joe Taysom

Thank you and goodnight!

Thanks for being with Far Out for our coverage of the 98th Academy Awards, which saw One Battle After Another reign supreme with six wins, including ‘Best Picture’, and although it didn’t win the biggest prize of the night, Sinners was the second-most decorated movie of the night with four wins.

On a personal level, Jessie Buckley and Michael B Jordan can now stand proud as members of Hollywood’s elite following their victories in the ‘Best Actress’ and ‘Best Actor’ categories, respectively.

Marty Supreme’s failure to win any awards will grab the headlines, and Timothée Chalamet was the butt of many jokes throughout the ceremony, as well as on social media, as his wait to become an Oscar-winner continues.

While there was nothing particularly scandalous about tonight’s event, it was a celebration of cinema that saw stars stand tall against AI, placing humans and humanity first.

After several months, the awards season is finally over, and before you know it, we’ll be talking about next year’s Oscars as the cycle repeats itself, and Far Out will be here to lead the conversation.

‘One Battle After Another’ wins ‘Best Picture’

One Battle After Another has finished the Oscars by winning ‘Best Picture’, crowning off its victorious night with a sixth victory.

During his speech, Anderson cast his mind back to 1975 and the Oscar-nominees in that year, explaining how every film is a winner in its own right, before thanking the cast who brought his vision to life.

While Chase Infiniti didn’t receive a nomination, Anderson labelled her “the heart of my movie”, and one can imagine that she’ll be stepping foot on the Oscars stage again during her incredibly bright future.

One Battle After Another also won the Oscars for ‘Best Adapted Screenplay’, ‘Best Casting’, ‘Best Director’ for Anderson, ‘Best Supporting Actor’ for Sean Penn, and ‘Best Editing’.

Paul Thomas Anderson wins ‘Best Director’

Paul Thomas Anderson has won the second Oscar of his career, which also happens to be his second Oscar in the space of an hour.

Similarly to his Bafta speech, Anderson emotionally used his speech to honour his late collaborator Adam Somner, who tragically died before One Battle After Another was released.

He also paid tribute to his fellow nominees, before stating, “We need each other, this is a wonderful gift, I’m so happy to call the movies home”, and “Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

Anderson winning ‘Best Director’ was a longtime coming, and thankfully, he now has the honour that he has greatly deserved for decades.

First K-Pop ‘Best Original Song’ winner

Huntr/X’s ‘Golden’, which they just performed on the Oscars stage, has become the first-ever K-pop song to win ‘Best Original Song’ at the Academy Awards.

The chart-topping track, taken from the smash hit Netflix film K-Pop Demon Hunters, has taken on a life of its own, and it’s win is unsurprising.

The speech was cut short, however, which says everything about how far proceedings have overrun already and is an indicator that time is running short.

‘Sentimental Value’ wins!

Sentimental Value has won the Oscar for ‘Best International Feature Film’, with Joachim Trier winning his first ever Academy Award.

It was a hotly-contested category this year, including The Secret Agent and The Voice of Hind Rajab, but Sentimental Value took the gong.

Trier closed his speech by powerfully saying, “All adults are responsible for all children, it’s not vote for a politician who doesn’t take this into account.”

Javier Bardem: “No to war and free Palestine”

Upon delivering the award for ‘Best International Feature Film’, Javier Bardem proudly said at the Oscars, “No to war and Free Palestine”.

A clear and consise statement, during a ceremony which hasn’t been filled with political messages.

Which movie has won the most Oscars so far?

Currently, One Battle After Another is out in front with four Oscars, but both Frankenstein and Sinners are trailing closely behind with three apiece; therefore, it’s still all to play for regarding the big winner tonight.

On the other hand, after picking up zero wins at the Baftas last month, Marty Supreme has not won an Oscar yet; however, Timothée Chalamet is among the favourites for ‘Best Actor’, which would change the fortunes of the film hugely despite a mixed awards season overall.

‘Sinners’ can’t stop winning

Sinners‘ growing list of Oscars just keeps expanding by the minute, with ‘Best Cinematography’ the latest Academy Award that it’s picked up tonight.

Autumn Durald used her speech to speak about her close working relationship with director Ryan Coogler, and said, “I’m so honoured to be here. I really want all the women in this room to stand up because I feel like I don’t get here without you guys. I really truly mean that. I have felt so much love from all the women on this campaign.”

Ludwig Göransson makes Oscars history

Aged just 41, Ludwig Göransson is now a triple-Oscar winner, which makes him the youngest person in history to have achieved this honour, and it’s hard to imagine that he’s not going to continue to add plenty more in the years to come.

However, there’s still some way to go before he catches Alfred Newman’s record of nine wins in this category.

‘Bridesmaids’ reunion!

In an unexpected twist, Bridesmaids stars Rose Byrne, Maya Rudolph, Ellie Kemper, Kristen Wiig, and Mellissa McCarthy have reunited to present the Oscar for ‘Best Original Score’, and the chemistry between them is still electric for all to see.

The Oscar for ‘Best Original Score’ has gone to Ludwig Goransson for Sinners. It’s his third triumph in this category, following Oppenheimer and Black Panther, cementing his status as a composer of the highest reputation in Hollywood.

A powerful speech from ‘Mr Nobody Against Putin’

After Mr Nobody Against Putin won ‘Best Documentary Feature Film’, the team behind the film explained the lessons we should all lhave learnt from the situation in Russia, highlighting “when people are murdered on the street,” and “when oligarchs own the media and tell us how to consume our media”.

Sadly, those quotes don’t sound like he’s only talking about Russia right now…

Jimmy Kimmel compares CBS to North Korea

Jimmy Kimmel is here and brutally compared CBS to North Korea, stating, “As you know, there are some countries which don’t allow free speech. I’m not at liberty to say which. Let’s just leave it at North Korea and CBS.”

Of course, he also got a joke in at the expense of the so-called documentary, Melania, while presenting the award for ‘Best Documentary Short Film’.

James Van Der Beek also snubbed by Academy

Another late actor that was ignored by the Academy was James Van Der Beek, who died from cancer earlier this year.

Although he was more familiar to audiences for his work in television, such as Dawson’s Creek, he also starred in Varsity Blues and Rules of Attraction, which makes the decision to overlook him extremely confusing.

Brigitte Bardot snubbed during ‘In Memoriam’

While the ‘In Memoriam’ segment celebrated dozens of lives lost from the film industry during the last 12 months, French screen icon Brigitte Bardot was not mentioned by the Oscars.

Although this could have been down to her not working in Hollywood and instead contributing to French cinema, her controversial right-wing politics were also potentially why she was overlooked.

Notably, between 1997 and 2008, Bardot was taken to court five times on charges of inciting racial hatred due to Islamophobic comments. Additionally, she made incredibly homophobic comments in her 2003 memoir, A Cry in the Silence, and also attacked unemployed people in the same book.

Robert Redford remembered by Barbra Streisand

If you hadn’t already got tissues next to you, then that was a rookie mistake, as this Barbra Streisand tribute to Robert Redford is an utter tear-jerker.

After running through his huge contribution to the world through his films, as well as the Sundance Film Festival, before adding, “I miss him now more than ever, even though he loved teasing me”, and explaining how he affectionately called her Babs, much to her initial frustration.

She then revealed he once told her, “‘Babs, I love you dearly and I always will’,” before sharing, “And in the last note I wrote to him, I wrote, ‘I love you, too’ and I signed it, ‘Babs’.”

Powerfully moving.

‘In Memoriam’ segment

Now, the In Memoriam segment is acting as a painful reminder of the huge number of figures that we have lost from the entertainment industry over the last 12 months, ranging from behind-the-scenes figures to stars like Diane Ladd, Diane Keaton, Catherine O’Hara and Claudia Cardinale.

Rachel McAdams is remembering her late friend Diane Keaton and looks close to tears as she honours somebody who she looked up to both as an actor, but more importantly, as a human.

Billy Crystal remembers Rob Reiner

Billy Crystal has taken to the stage to remember the late, great Rob Reiner, who we lost in the most tragic circumstances imaginable last December. Hearing Crystal talk to the audience about Reiner’s career is another poignant reminder of his vast impact on cinema, which will never be forgotten.

“My friend’s movies will last a lifetime”, Crystal said from the heart, which is a statement of fact.

After reminding everyone about how Reiner and his wife, Michelle Singer, also helped make same-sex marriage legal in the US, and remembering her vital impact to the world, he powerfurly concluded, “All we can say is what fun we had storming the castle.”

Ryan Coogler becomes a first-time Oscar winner!

Sinners director Ryan Coogler has won the Oscar for ‘Best Original Screenplay’ and said it “was an incredible honour” to receive such an esteemed prize, as well as thanking every member of the cast and crew who helped him win this award.

Coogler delivered an emotional speech from the heart, which got everybody on their feet in the Dolby Theatre, and the section aimed towards his children, who are watching at home, was particularly tear-jerking.

Paul Thomas Anderson finally wins an Oscar!

It took many years, but finally Paul Thomas Anderson is an Oscar winner after receiving the Academy Award for ‘Best Adapted Screenplay’ for One Battle After Another.

Anderson used his speech to thank his family, including his wife Maya Rudolph, and revealed that he wrote the film for his kids, who he says “will be the generation to bring us common sense and decency” despite inheriting a world where those traits are seemingly extinct.

An emotional moment that was decades in the making.

‘Sean Penn’ wins ‘Best Supporting Actor’

Sean Penn has won the Oscar for ‘Best Supporting Actor’ for his devastatingly evil role as Colonel Lockjaw in One Battle After Another.

However, just like the Baftas the other week, Penn couldn’t be arsed to turn up, and Kieran Culkin, who presented the award, accepted it on his behalf.

Hopefully, Penn is watching at home and celebrating with a few small beers to toast his fellow One Battle After Another co-star Benicio del Toro, who is actually in attendance at the Oscars.

Another dig at Timothée Chalamet…

The story of the night so far has been everyone dunking on Marty Supreme star Timothée Chalamet for his recent comments on ballet and opera, including in Conan’s opening monologue.

Now, the team behind Two People Exchanging Saliva also poked fun at Chalamet for the same reason during their victory speech for ‘Live Action Short Film’.

Will Chalamet have the last laugh and win ‘Best Actor’? It would certainly be one way to change the ongoing narrative.

There is a tie…

Wow, the Oscar for ‘Live Action Short Film’ has been awarded as a tie, with The Singers taking to the stage to accept the first award before Two People Exchanging Saliva were also awarded an Oscar.

This is only the seventh time in Oscars history that a tie has taken place, and Kumail Nanjiani couldn’t help but highlight that as a result of the joint victory that it’s “ironic that the short film Oscar is going to take twice as long”.

The inaugural ‘Best Casting’ winner is…

Cassandra Kulukundis, the casting director for One Battle After Another, has won the first ever Oscar for ‘Best Casting’.

She used her opportunity to shout loudly about her industry, which has flown under the radar for too long, and to also lovingly poke fun at Paul Thomas Anderson, who she’s worked with for decades, for winning an Oscar before him.

Jacob Elordi’s 400-hours in the make-up chair ‘Frankenstein’

Remarkably, after the award was given out to the team behind Frankenstein for ‘Best Make-Up and Hairstyling’, it was revealed that Jacob Elordi spent 400 hours on set in the make-up chair in order to look like a monster.

While there are harder jobs in the world, I don’t envy Elordi spending 400 hours doing that laborious task.

‘Frankenstein’ wins ‘Best Costume Design’ and ‘Best Make-Up and Hairstyling’

Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein has picked up its first Oscar of the night with Kate Hawley accepting the award for ‘Best Costume Design’. Moments later, Frankenstein was being celebrated once again in the ‘Best Make-Up and Hairstyling’ category, which were both richly deserved victories.

After all, what would Frankenstein have been without those who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to capture the aesthetic? It’s one huge challenge to make Jacob Elordi look frighteningly ugly.

Another joke about AI taking over Hollywood

A fake advert for an AI firm called Ventura Crossroads, including a cameo from Martin Scorsese, just aired during the Oscars, which plots to reimagine classic movies for phone screens thanks to AI, which was met with rapturous laughter from the crowd.

If only there weren’t several people in Silicon Valley who are likely developing that very application already, then it would feel more like satire rather than a bleak look into what the future holds…

‘Sinners’ gets the Oscars grooving

The music element of Sinners was undeniably spine-tingling, and now, they are bringing it to life on stage at the Oscars with star Miles Caton receiving a helping hand from the likes of Alabama Shakes singer Brittany Howard and Shaboozey.

It feels like being transported straight to the juke joint that was set up by Smoke and Stack in the movie.

Will Arnett stands up against AI

While presenting the award for ‘Best Animated Short’, Will Arnett used his position to praise human animators and hit out against the rise of AI, which was met with rapturous applause from those in the room.

The Oscars is a celebration of human achievement, not technological, and Arnett’s speech is a strong reminder of that crucial fact.

‘K-Pop Demon Hunters’ wins

It has been the biggest film, streaming wise, of the last 12 months and has become a global phenomenon, therefore, it’s little surprise that K-Pop Demon Hunters won ‘Best Animated Film’.

Amy Maddigan wins ‘Best Supporting Actress’

Weapons star Amy Maddigan has won the Oscar for ‘Best Supporting Actress’. Maddigan arrived on stage and immediately erupted into laughter before thanking those who have made her Oscar win possible.

She was previously nominated in the same category 40 years earlier, and admitted to feeling “flummoxed” at her victory, as well as sharing that her legs were “shaking”.

Poignantly, Maddigan also made sure to shout out her fellow nominees, who all looked delighted that she had finally won an Oscar aged 75.

Conan O’Brien mocks Timothée Chalamet

Conan O’Brien began his speech by joking that he’s set to be the “last human host of the Academy Awards”, before poking fun at Timothée Chalamet for his recent comments about ballet and opera, which he said is the reason for the increased security tonight.

It’s now minutes to go until the Oscars begin, and there will be a conclusion after all those chats we’ve all been enjoying with friends in recent months about which movies will win big.

Jessie Buckley names her pick for next James Bond

If tonight goes as anticipated, Jessie Buckley will make history as the first Irish winner of the Oscar for ‘Best Actress’ for her performance in Hamnet, and on the red carpet, she was in a buoyant mood.

While speaking to Variety, she didn’t pull any punches when asked about who should follow in Daniel Craig’s footsteps as the next 007, saying that Callum Turner “would be pretty great”.

Which movie will win ‘Best Picture’?

While there are no guarentees in regards to ‘Best Picture’, all the signs seem to point to Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another winning the big one tonight at the Dolby Theatre.

However, Sinners also can’t be ruled out, after all, it has racked up 16 nominations from members of the Academy for a reason.

Albeit a long shot, Train Dreams could possibly secure the victory despite being picked out as a favourite by a few, but it appears unlikely Marty Supreme will triumph in Los Angeles in this category.

One nominee that we can safely rule out is F1, while it was a huge box office success, movies like this just don’t win the Oscar for ‘Best Picture’ in 2026.

Will Diane Warren extend her unluckiest record in Oscars history?

Being nominated for an Oscar should be enough of a victory in itself, however, Dianne Warren would greatly appreciate actually winning the Academy Award for ‘Best Original Song’ at some point.

Currently, she holds the record for most nominations without a win with 16, and could extend that to 17 tonight if she loses out after securing a nod for ‘Dear Me’ from Diane Warren: Relentless.

On the red carpet, Warrne was probed about who she is rooting for tonight, and honestly replied, “Me.”

Despite her wishes, it does appear that the award will belong to ‘Golden’ from K-Pop Demon Hunters, and Warren will be left in her seat once again. Always the bridesmaid…

Let’s talk ‘Sinners’, the most-nominated movie in Oscars history

Already, even before the ceremony has begun, Sinners has etched its name in the history books of the Academy Awards after racking up the most nominations ever with a total of 16.

If it is to become the most-decorated film in history, it will need to win a total of 12 awards. Currently, Ben-Hur, Titanic and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King are all tied on 11.

Ryan Coogler could also become the first Black director to win ‘Best Director’. Remarkably, only seven Black directors have been nominated in the category, and none have been victorious.

Additionally, if Michael B Jordan wins ‘Best Actor’, he would become the first actor to win the award for the portrayal of twins.

While it remains to be seen what will happen, it’s hard to envisage a scenario where Sinners doesn’t win a bundle of awards, even if it falls short of a record-breaking haul.
