Oscars 2026: Barry Keoghan heaps praise on Irish win

Barry Keoghan bestowed praise on fellow Irish actor Jessie Buckley for her Oscar-winning role in Hamnet.

“What’s up, Jessie? Well done, bring it home,” Keoghan told BBC’s Arts and Entertainment correspondent Colin Paterson on the Vanity Fair red carpet.

“I’m proud, I’m really, really proud, amazing,” Keoghan furthered.

Hamnet dramatises the family life of playwright William Shakespeare and his wife, Anne Hathaway, amid the turmoil of their titular 11-year-old son’s death.

Directed by Chloé Zhao and adapted from Maggie O’Farrell’s 2020 novel, Hamnet received eight nominations at the 98th Academy Awards, including ‘Best Picture’ and ‘Best Director’, Buckley picking up the ‘Best Actress in a Leading Role’ Oscar for her starring role as Hathaway.

Such accolades come from the back of Hamnet‘s previous prestigious wins, including winning the ‘Best Motion Picture – Drama’ and ‘Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama’ for Buckley at the 83rd Golden Globe Awards, and the film was also in the American Film Institute’s top ten films of 2025.

Keoghan went on to celebrate his Irish homeland and its acting pedigree of late, “When you read all the names that have been nominated, for such a small island… we are true storytellers.”

“I am massively, massively proud of Jessie,” he continued. “I went to see Hamnet at the premiere, and I couldn’t stop crying. “When it was finished, I had to rush out because I couldn’t stop thinking of my little boy; everyone was sobbing.”

Despite his high acclaim, Keoghan only counts one ‘Best Supporting Actor’ Oscar nomination for 2023’s The Banshees of Inisherin.
